The history of the Federation
Held in Melbourne in 1984, the inaugural Australian National Police Games were held in conjunction with the Victoria Police Games. The 1984 Victorian Police Games Federation had the foresight to invite all Police Personnel from across Australia to compete, with the intention of bringing all Police Service personnel together under the banner of sport. Medals were awarded to both Victorian and National champions. The overwhelming success of these Games led, in 1985 to the formation of the Australia New Zealand Police Games Federation (ANZPGF). The vision to expand the Victorian Games by organisers must be acknowledged. This spirit of friendly competition has never left the Games, and has expanded to embrace competitors from New Zealand and other Pacific nations. From 1999, all full-time Emergency Services personnel were also invited to compete.
The Australia New Zealand Police and Emergency Service Games is the property of the Australia New Zealand Police Games Federation (ANZPGF). The ANZPGF is managed by a Chairman and Board of Directors. The Board is supported by a Committee which is made of delegates from the sporting bodies in each jurisdiction.
Like no other event on the Emergency Services calendar, the Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games builds camaraderie and promotes a healthy lifestyle through the participation in sport, while heightening the public's awareness of Police and Emergency Services. The Games are conducted every second year at a new location. This provides competitors and their family the opportunity to travel and enjoy a holiday at numerous locations throughout Australia and New Zealand.
There are two trophies which are keenly competed for at each Games. The Australia New Zealand Police Games Federation Trophy, and the Emergency Services Shield.
These respective trophies are retained by the winning jurisdiction for the period between each Games, when once again they are competed for.
